When Memories Fade: Finding Peace through the Pen
A Day That Changed Everything
December 18, 2024, will forever be marked as the day I lost another piece of myself. It was a bright, beautiful morning—until a woman turned left into my path, and everything changed. The collision triggered the deployment of the airbags and left me unconscious with a severe concussion. Since then, I’ve noticed subtle changes—forgetting which toothbrush is mine or walking in public unaware that my pants are inside out. While I’m grateful I walked away from that crash, I can’t help but mourn the part of myself I lost that day, a grief that has lingered for the past five months.
The Power of Writing in Grief
Grief often leaves us feeling lost, searching for hope. During these times, many find comfort in expressing their feelings through writing or journaling. Putting pen to paper can be a healing act—helping us process emotions, gain clarity, and draw closer to the Divine.
A Creative Way to Heal: Writing Your Own Psalm
One meaningful practice is crafting your own psalm—poetry or prayer that reflects your current feelings and hopes. Psalms have long offered comfort, giving voice to our deepest fears and greatest hopes. They help us articulate pain, doubts, and longing, all while anchoring us in faith.
Example: A Personal Psalm
During my weekly women’s Bible study, I was invited to write a Psalm. Drawing inspiration from King David’s psalms, I composed this heartfelt prayer:
Psalm of the Cloudy Mind and the Light Unfailing
O Lord, in the shadow of that fateful day,
When the crash clouded my mind and stole my way,
My thoughts, like clouds, drifted far and wide,
Yet Your Word remained my faithful guide.
A beacon shining through the fog so dense,
Your Scriptures, my refuge, my recompense.
In quiet humility, I sat at Your feet,
Listening more than speaking, my soul to meet.
Though I forget which toothbrush bears my name,
And walked in pants inside out—oh, what a game!
Still, I find strength in Your mighty name,
Your joy on my face, a perpetual flame.
For You are my God, unwavering and true,
Turning my forgetfulness into praise anew.
A season of haze, but Your love remains bright,
My heart sings boldly, in Your light I delight.
Healing Through Journaling
Writing during grief can be incredibly healing. It allows you to pour out raw emotions, acknowledge struggles, and reaffirm trust in God’s unfailing love. Whether through poetry, prayer, or simple reflections, journaling becomes a sacred space—a refuge for your soul.
Tips for Effective Journaling
– Be Honest: Express your true feelings without judgment.
– Incorporate Scripture: Use verses or create your own psalm to strengthen your faith.
– Write Regularly: Make journaling a daily or nightly habit to process ongoing emotions.
– Reflect and Revisit: Re-read your entries over time to see growth and God’s faithfulness.
Closing Reflection
Remember, grief is a journey. Healing often unfolds through honest expression and surrendering your pain to God’s care. Your words can illuminate the path through darkness, reminding you that even in the hardest moments, God’s light remains unfailing.
May your words bring comfort; your faith bring strength; and your heart find peace in His eternal love.
