When the Question Hurts: Navigating Mother’s Day After Child Loss

Yesterday, as the world celebrated Mother’s Day, I found myself reflecting on a question many grieving moms know all too well: Do you have children? Though simple and often asked with genuine curiosity or kindness, for those of us who have lost a child, it can feel like a weight pressing on our hearts.

 

After 20 years of wrestling with that question, I can confidently say I am a mom of a whole baseball team in heaven and four on earth. This truth has been woven into my soul through years of love, loss, and hope. When I asked myself if I am a mother, I finally realized—despite the grief and unanswered questions—that my motherhood is eternal and unshakable.

 

If you’re reading this and your child is no longer here, please know: your motherhood is not diminished by loss. Your love, memories, and identity as a mother remain steadfast—even if others may not see it as they once did. The question can stir a flood of emotions—grief, longing, perhaps even guilt. But I want to remind you today that your motherhood is sacred, eternal, and deeply rooted in God’s love.

 

A Heartfelt Reflection

 

Motherhood is more than physical presence; it’s a bond woven into our very souls. Psalm 139:13-14 declares, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Your child’s life, no matter how brief, was part of God’s divine plan. Their love continues to shape you, and your love for them remains alive in your heart.

 

Honoring Your Feelings

 

It’s natural to feel pain, anger, or exhaustion from the questions. It is okay not to feel celebratory on Mother’s Day. Remember, Jesus understands our pain; Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that “we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses.” He walks with us through every tear and ache.

 

Hope for the Future

 

While the ache of loss may never fully disappear, hope remains—hope rooted in Christ’s resurrection and the promise of eternal life. Revelation 21:4 assures us, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.” One day, we will be reunited with our children in the presence of our Savior, where pain and sorrow will be no more.
